This well-known Canadian artist from Port Hope, Ontario captured the unique features of the Right Honourable Sir Wilfrid Laurier (1841-1919) in miniature. He left an early life of farming to become an artist, travelling to England to study art. He enjoyed some success exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1879 to 1883. After a brief return to Canada, he made his home in New York City, returning to Rice Lake, Ontario every summer. It has been suggested that an exhibition of his work held in 1889 in New York may have spurred some revival of the art of the miniature in the United States. His clientele included prominent political figures and celebrities.
