Ned Hanlan
Proposed design for the Ned Hanlan commemorative postage stamp, 1980, by Clive Webster

Canada’s first national and international sports hero, Edward “Ned” Hanlan (1855-1908), was world champion from 1880 to 1884 in the very popular sport of single-scull rowing. The “Boy in Blue” was one of the first rowers to master the sliding-seat technique. Based on a photograph taken by W. Goodden in 1878, this preliminary design was used to produce a 1980 stamp commemorating the centenary of Hanlan’s world championship.
