New York Americans, National Hockey League,
runners-up, 1928-1929, April 1929, by Mentzer (Lionel Conacher is fifth from left.)
Considered one of the best all-around Canadian
athletes, Lionel “Big Train” Conacher (1900-1954) excelled in football, hockey, lacrosse, baseball,
boxing and wrestling. His many talents made him a major attraction in the 1920s and 1930s, and
helped to popularize professional hockey in major American cities such as New York.
