Tommy Burns (1881-1955), 1912, by Peter McIntyre
At 5 feet 7 inches, Tommy Burns’ size did not stop him
from becoming the world heavyweight boxing champion in 1906. He defended his title eleven times within
a period of less than two years. In December 1908, Burns became the first fighter to agree to a
championship bout with a black boxer, the legendary Jack Johnson, to whom he lost his title.
