Jacques Plante
Jacques Plante lifting his goaltender's mask, 1960, photographer unknown

One of hockey’s greatest goaltenders, Jacques Plante (1929-1986) was also an innovator who was not afraid to go against the traditions of hockey. He was the first to wear a protective face mask on a permanent basis and, with his proactive style in and around the hockey net, he changed the way a goaltender played the position. The poems and letters written to his wife, during his second career as a coach, also reveal another aspect of his non-conventional personality within the world of professional hockey.
