Ethel Catherwood
Ethel Catherwood of Canada, winner of a gold medal in the women’s high jump event at the VIIIth Olympic Games, 1928, photographer unknown

Ethel Catherwood (born 1909) is the only Canadian female athlete to have won an individual gold medal in a track and field event at the Olympics. In 1926, she surprised the track and field scene by breaking the world record for the high jump. Nicknamed the “Saskatoon Lily” by her fans for her beauty and her Saskatchewan roots, she claimed the first gold medal ever awarded to a female high jumper at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam.
