Otto and Maria Jelinek, 4 December 1959,
photographer unknown
Maria (born 1942) and Otto (born 1940) Jelinek’s
World’s Pair figure skating title in 1962 marked the last win of a remarkable run of seven world
championships in eight years for a Canadian pair. Having emigrated from Czechoslovakia in their
youth, the brother-and-sister tandem won their title in Prague, the capital of their native country,
where they were applauded by admiring fans. Otto Jelinek later became a Cabinet Minister and served
as Minister of State for Fitness and Amateur Sport from 1984 to 1988.
