Paris Crew
“The Renowned St. John [sic] N.B., (Paris) Crew, Champion Oarsmen of the World,” 1871, by G. P. Roberts

In 1867, Robert Fulton, George Price, Samuel Hutton and Elijah Ross surprised the favoured European teams by easily winning the World Amateur Rowing Championship at the Paris International Exposition. Known thereafter as the “Paris Crew,” the world champions became national heroes upon their return to Canada. They successfully defended their title against American crews until a British team beat them in 1870. The crew from Saint John won a rematch in 1871 in New Brunswick; unfortunately, the event was marred by the sudden death of one of the British rowers.
