Elaine Tanner
Elaine Tanner, winner of two silver medals and a bronze medal, XIXth Summer Olympic Games, Mexico, 1968, by H. J. Leclair

Known as “Mighty Mouse” because of her short stature and powerful strokes, Elaine Tanner (born 1951) is probably Canada’s most versatile swimmer ever. Her medals haul at the 1966 Commonwealth Games (seven medals, including four gold), the 1967 Pan Am Games (four medals, including two gold) and the 1968 Olympic Games (two silvers and a bronze), is unmatched for a Canadian swimmer of that era. In 1966, at the age of fifteen, she became the youngest athlete to win the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s outstanding athlete.
