Statement by Ian E. Wilson, Librarian and Archivist of Canada, on the Passing of Pierre Berton

I join all Canadians in mourning the loss of Pierre Berton—one of our nation's most important and respected writers—a proud Canadian whose voice contributed significantly to the understanding of our history.

In a writing career spanning more than 60 years, as a journalist and later as the author of more than 50 books, Pierre Berton brought our historical records to life. He was a thorough researcher, casting a broad net for the revealing quotation, the essential anecdote, the words that could transport readers to the place and time. He gave life and colour to the original sources preserved in Canada's libraries and archives. Mr. Berton had the gift of defining a character in a few sentences; he demonstrated repeatedly that the Canadian story includes the stories of ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary deeds.

Pierre Berton received many honours for his writing, including three Governor General's Literary Awards, and many of his works have been translated. He held numerous honorary degrees and was a Companion of the Order of Canada. He was a founding member of the Writers' Union of Canada and the Writers' Development Trust. As chairman of the Heritage Canada Foundation, he worked tirelessly to preserve and promote all aspects of our architectural, cultural, natural and documentary heritage.

Born and raised in the Yukon, he was one of our country's first modern writers to champion the beauty and possibilities of Canada's North.
