President and Mrs. Bush visit the Library and Archives Canada Preservation Centre

On Tuesday, November 30, 2004, our institution had the honour of hosting President and Mrs. Bush, National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, Chief of Staff Andrew H. Card, Jr., and Ambassador and Mrs. Cellucci. They were joined by Heritage Minister Liza Frulla and Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, the Principal Secretary to Paul Martin, for a tour of the Preservation Centre and a viewing of a selection of records illustrating the long-standing relationship between Canada and the United States.

The documents were grouped under the theme Parallels: 49 Snapshots of the Canada-US Relationship. From early letters to Santa Claus to the travel diary of a Canadian in America, and from political cartoons to the correspondence of Canadians who served in the American Civil War, the documents provided a glimpse of the people and ideas that contribute to our cultural experiences.

The tour also included demonstrations of various preservation techniques, such as book repair and binding, restoration of photographs (daguerreotypes and ambrotypes), repair of watercolours and large maps, and the treatment of video and film.
