To mark the anniversary of the birth of Sir John A. Macdonald (January 11, 1815), Library and Archives Canada offers a virtual tour about a man whose impact on the history of Canada was significant.
In 1856, John A. Macdonald became "Prime Minister" of the Province of Canada. He was a driving force behind Confederation, and it was because of the important part that he played that he was asked to become Canada's first prime minister. He remained prime minister for most of the rest of his life. He died on June 6, 1891, soon after winning his fourth election.
