Ottawa The National Archives of Canada will
release the 1970 Cabinet Conclusions and Documents on Monday, April 23, 2001. These are the
documents of the Twentieth Ministry of the Right Honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau, 1968 to
1979.
Journalists are invited to Room 156
at 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12 noon.
The records from this period contain
information on events relating to the FLQ crisis as well as the implementation of the War
Measures Act, the Montreal Postal situation, Canada’s recognition of China, the Niamey
Conference (and creation of La Francophonie), bilingualism policy, income security, the fight
against inflation and Arctic sovereignty.
After the session, these Cabinet Conclusions
and Documents will be accessible for a period of four weeks in the Main Reading Room of the
National Archives. Interested media must register for a research pass in the main lobby of the
Archives at 395 Wellington Street. The Registration Desk is open Monday to Friday from
8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The National Archives is also pleased to
announce that digitized copies of these Cabinet Conclusions will be available, for the first time,
on the National Archives Web site as of Wednesday, April 25. These can be found at
www.collectionscanada.gc.ca under ArchiviaNet. Go to “Records created by departments and agencies of the
Federal Government”, and “Search Database” and then check off the box “Descriptions with a
digitized image”. Leave blank “Keywords” search and press “Submit query”.
