NATIONAL
ARCHIVIST IAN E. WILSON CHAMPIONS THE IMPORTANCE OF ARCHIVES TO CANADIANS
For immediate release
Ottawa, October 30, 2001
- York University will bestow an honorary doctorate on Ian E. Wilson, National
Archivist, at its fall convocation ceremony on November 3. This is only the
second time York has awarded such a degree to a National Archivist.
The honorary Doctorate
of Letters (DLitt) recognizes Mr. Wilson’s enormous contribution to Canada
through his work in the archival community, both at home and abroad. Mr.
Wilson has devoted his career to preserving private and government records for
future generations.
"York University
has a long tradition of promoting Canadian studies and research. I am
delighted that Ian has been recognized for his significant contributions
toward making Canada’s archival heritage accessible," said
York University’s archivist, Mr. Kent Haworth.
As National Archivist,
Ian Wilson has earned the reputation for being available to the public and
passionate about the importance and relevance of the documents of the National
Archives of Canada. He is keen to inform Canadians that these documents are
theirs, and accessible to them. He is particularly proud of the Archives Web
site - found at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca - which gives Canadians access to a wide range
of documents, including paintings, photographs, stamps, and maps, which tell
the story of Canada and its people.
Mr. Wilson began his
career at Queen’s University Archives, later becoming Saskatchewan’s
Provincial Archivist, and then Archivist of Ontario. He was appointed National
Archivist of Canada in July 1999.
Mr. Wilson is an adjunct
professor at the University of Toronto, and has published extensively on
history, archives, heritage and information management. He regularly responds
to public requests for lectures and is known to be a humorous and gifted
speaker.
The ceremony takes place
at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 3 at the Tait McKenzie Main Auditorium,
York University Keele Campus, 4700 Keele St., Toronto. York’s Web site is www.yorku.ca.
