A Real Companion and Friend:
The Diary of William Lyon Mackenzie King
OTTAWA, December 17 - The diaries of
Canada's longest serving Prime Minister, the Right Honourable William Lyon Mackenzie King will be launched today on the Web site of the Library and Archives of Canada.
The site, entitled A Real Companion and Friend: The Diary of William Lyon Mackenzie King, contains more than 50,000 transcripts and original handwritten pages from the diaries kept by Mackenzie King for 57 years, from 1893 to 1950.
As Canada's Prime Minister for all but five years between 1921 to 1948, Mackenzie King, through his diaries, provides a unique perspective on the politics and personalities of Canada and the world during the early twentieth century. The site also showcases more than 421 photographs and 17 rarely seen audio and film clips. In addition, the launch coincides with William Lyon Mackenzie
King's birthday on December 17, 1874, in Berlin, (now Kitchener), Ontario.
