Governor General’s Literary Award Winners’ Reading at the National Library of Canada to Be Aired Live on the Web

Ottawa, November 15, 2000  --  For the ninth consecutive year, the National Library of Canada celebrates the Governor General’s Literary Awards by inviting winners to read from their works. This year, the readings take place at the Library on Wednesday, November 15, the day following the announcement of the winners.

"The Governor General’s Awards are Canada’s national prizes, the highest honour we can bestow upon our authors, illustrators and translators," says National Librarian Roch Carrier. "This event provides us with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of these gifted Canadians and to enter into the world of their imagination."

The evening’s readings, presented in cooperation with the Canada Council for the Arts, begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the National Library. The readings, in both English and French, will be followed by an autographing session. To make this event accessible to the readers of the country and of the world, the readings will be Web cast at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/webcast/index-e.html.

The readings by the Governor General’s Award winners are the highlight of the Library’s fall literary program. The National Library, whose mandate it is to collect and preserve Canada’s published heritage, strives to be a key centre in the literary world.

The sponsor of the event is Gale Group. Tickets are $15 ($12 for Friends of the National Library) and may be obtained from the Friends at 613-992-8304.
