News Release2000-13 The National Library of Canada’s Theses CanadaOttawa, September 19, 2000 -- The National Library of Canada, after preliminary consultations with representatives from the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies, the Canadian Graduate Council, the National Graduate Council, the Conseil national des cycles supérieurs de la Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries and the Canadian Association of University Teachers, has instructed UMI Dissertations Publishing, a division of Bell and Howell Information and Learning, to remove Canadian theses titles from the Contentville.com Web site until further notice. "This is an interim measure," said David Balatti, Director of Bibliographic Services at the National Library of Canada, "as we have embarked on a series of national consultations with the groups affected to review the program as a whole. Contentville.com has been consulted and agrees with this course of action." Groups consulted to date have agreed that the program of preserving and making available the collective academic research in Canada is an invaluable service offered by the National Library of Canada. The challenge now is to review with the parties concerned how best to deliver this service in the years to come.
