National Librarian of Canada Announces Government On-Line (GOL) Task Force

Ottawa, June 9, 2000 -- In keeping with the federal government's Government On-Line (GOL) initiative to have all government programs and services online by 2004, Roch Carrier, National Librarian, announced the creation of the National Library of Canada's Government On-Line Task Force.

"The National Library of Canada and its 21 000 partner libraries across the country," said Mr. Carrier, "are well-placed to provide Canadians, no matter where they are located, with affordable and easy access to the information, programs and services of their federal government. We are pleased to bring our alliances, our Internet experience and our collective information management expertise to bear in assisting the government to meet the information needs of Canadians."

In addition to managing the Library's own GOL projects to bring the riches of the Library to all Canadians, the Task Force will also facilitate GOL initiatives with other partners, such as the National Archives and the federal government library community.

Ms. Gisèle DeVillers, Director of the new task force said, "We are ready to make a major contribution to ensure Canada is the most connected country in the world by 2004."
