Governor General’s Literary Award Winners Read at National Library of Canada

Ottawa, November 16, 1999  --  For the eighth consecutive year, the National Library of Canada celebrates the Governor General’s Literary Awards by inviting winners to read from their works. This year, the Gala Reading takes place in the Library’s recently renovated auditorium on Wednesday, November 17, the evening following the announcement of the winners.

"I cannot think of a better place to celebrate the winners of Canada’s national book awards than the National Library of Canada," says National Librarian Roch Carrier. "Libraries exist to bring books and readers together. We are proud to celebrate the accomplishments of Canada’s best writers, illustrators and translators in this most literary of settings, Canada’s home of the book."

The Gala Reading, presented in cooperation with the Canada Council for the Arts, is hosted by Ken Rockburn, host of CBC Radio’s All In A Day and Radio Canada television personality Odette Gough. It begins at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the National Library. The readings, in both English and French, will be followed by an autographing session.

The Gala Reading is the highlight of the Library’s fall literary program. The National Library, whose mandate it is to collect, preserve and promote Canada’s published heritage, is the premier literary programmer in the National Capital Region.

The presenting sponsor of the event is CGI. Tickets are $15 ($12 for Friends of the National Library) and may be obtained from the Friends at 613-992-8304.

An audio version of the Gala Reading, together with biographical and bibliographical information on the winners, will soon be available at the National Library’s Web site <http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca>.
