Governor General’s Literary Award Winners Read at National Library of Canada

Ottawa, November 17, 1998 - For the seventh consecutive year, the National Library of Canada celebrates the Governor General’s Literary Awards by inviting winners to read from their works. This year, the Gala Reading is at the Château Laurier Hotel on Wednesday, November 18, the evening following the announcement of the winners.

"It is always good when writers and their readers meet, but when they meet in such joyful circumstances, it is magic," says National Librarian Marianne Scott. "Libraries exist to bring books and readers together. We are proud of this event and its celebration of the accomplishments of Canada’s best writers, illustrators and translators."

The Gala Reading, presented in cooperation with the Canada Council for the Arts, is hosted by Ken Rockburn, host of CBC Radio’s All in a Day, and Radio Canada television personality Odette Gough. It begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Château Laurier Hotel. The readings, in both English and French, will be followed by an autographing session.

The Gala Reading is the highlight of the Library’s fall literary program, this year featuring more than 40 writers. The National Library, whose mandate it is to collect and preserve Canada’s published heritage, is the premier literary programmer in the National Capital Region.

The presenting sponsor of the event is CGI, with the Friends of the National Library as associate sponsor. Tickets are $15 ($12 for Friends of the Library) and may be obtained from the Friends at 613-992-8304.

An audio version of the Gala Reading, together with biographical and bibiographical information on the winners, will soon be available at the National Library’s Web site www.collectionscanada.gc.ca.
