News Release2001-09 National Library of Canada Swings Live!Ottawa, May 16, 2001 -- For the second consecutive year, the Ottawa International Jazz Festival’s Connoisseur Series will be held at the National Library of Canada. The six concerts in the series will showcase young and mid-career artists in the warm, intimate ambience of the Library’s auditorium. A popular feature of last year’s series will also return. Prior to the concerts, the Library’s Manager of Public Programs, Randall Ware, will conduct a 20-minute interview on stage with each of the featured artists. These interviews will be audiocast live on the Library’s Web site, www.collectionscanada.gc.ca. The partnership between the Library and the Festival has been fruitful. Throughout the past two years, we have jointly sponsored a series of concerts that have brought major Canadian and international musicians to Ottawa-area audiences. An important part of the Library’s mandate is to collect, preserve and promote Canadian recorded sound. The Library’s recorded sound collection contains more than 250 000 items in formats ranging from piano rolls to acetate to the latest digital technology. Our current exhibition, Oscar Peterson: A Jazz Sensation, will run throughout the summer. It features many items from the archive that Mr. Peterson has been donating to the Library since 1991.
