In presenting the discs to the Library, OVMA President Patrick Bourke said: "It is our wish that the music of the Ottawa Valley be shared with the world and be given its place in the Canadian mosaic." Accepting the discs on behalf of the Library, National Librarian Roch Carrier thanked the OVMA, saying: "The National Library is dedicated to preserving every book, CD and video produced in Canada so that future generations will know the depth and breadth of Canada’s cultural heritage. These sound recordings from the Ottawa Valley are a welcome addition to the Library’s collections." Founded in 1999, the OVMA already boasts 100 members. A wide variety of musical styles are evident in the discs deposited at the National Library, ranging from gospel, folk, Celtic, country and alternative rock to story songs and yoga music. The National Library counts about 250 000 sound recordings in its collections, in addition to music publications and the archives of many of Canada’s major musicians, songwriters, composers and musical organizations. The Library receives about 4 000 CDs via legal deposit each year. Legal deposit is a federal regulation that requires publishers and producers of commercial audio and video recordings to deposit copies at the National Library of Canada. - 30 - For further information on the National Library and its collections, contact National Library of Canada Media Contact |
