National Library of Canada Exhibits the Works of Poet Phyllis Webb

OTTAWA, January 14, 2002  --  The National Library of Canada proudly presents a new exhibit on the works of one of Canada’s most admired and mythically elusive 20th century poets. Phyllis Webb: Elemental showcases material from the archival fonds of Phyllis Webb held in the Literary Manuscript Collection of the National Library.

Through the four elements: water, earth, air and fire, the exhibit explores Webb’s works, which range from deeply personal, often anguished, love lyrics to historical monologues and prose-poems vigorously concerned with wider social issues.

Phyllis Webb has had a long and important career as a poet and Canadian cultural figure. Her published works stretch over five decades, from the 1950s to the 1990s, and include such titles as The Sea is Also a Garden, Hanging Fire and Sunday Water. Webb played a significant role during her brief career at the CBC where she distinguished herself through her collaboration with other poets as well as celebrities such as Glenn Gould and R.D. Laing.

In 1982, Phyllis Webb won the Governor General’s Award for Poetry for her selected poems The Vision Tree and in 1992 she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Visitors will be able to see portraits of Webb, and the manuscripts and typescripts in which she developed her published works. This exhibit is the first where reproductions of her artwork are being shown.

Phyllis Webb: Elemental is on display until February 28, 2002, in Exhibition Room D at the National Library of Canada, 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily. Admission is free of charge.
