Canada’s Superheroes Spring to Life on the National Library of Canada’s Web site

Ottawa, May 6, 2002  --  Who has never dreamed of becoming a superhero? For generations, children have had visions of filling the shoes of Superman or Batman. With the release of the movie Spiderman, there is no doubt that everyone will be rushing to see their favourite superhero on the big screen.

Did you know that Canada has its own superheroes? Johnny Canuck, Northern Lights and Fleur de Lys are some of the many characters featured on the National Library of Canada’s exciting Web site, Guardians of the North: The National Superhero in Canadian Comic-Book Art. The National Library’s Web site has brought these fictional characters back to life.

Created by comics scholar and archivist John Bell, in cooperation with the National Library’s Digital Library Task Force, the Guardians of the North Web site is based on an exhibition, originally mounted in 1992, that presented a history of Canada’s superheroes.

The Web site offers a revised version of the original exhibition narrative and features digital images of the items that were displayed. The site includes a digitized version of John Bell’s book Protectors of the North, to which new material has been added, including detailed profiles of Canada’s main national superheroes and brief biographies of their creators. This site can be accessed at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/superheroes/. Come and get to know Canada’s own superheroes!

The Digital Library of Canada program develops new Web content documenting Canadian heritage and culture to support of the life-long learning pursuits of Canadians. The program digitizes material from the collections of the National Library of Canada and its partners, provides interpretive information and develops strategic partnerships with other national content providers to ensure wide-ranging and sustainable access to Canadian cultural resources. The Digital Library of Canada program receives support from the Canadian Digital Cultural Content Initiative of Canadian Heritage.
