National Library of Canada Launches 14th Edition of Read Up On It Kit

Ottawa, September 26, 2002  -  Today at the Edmonton Public Library, National Librarian Roch Carrier launched the 2002 edition of Read Up On It, the National Library of Canada’s guide to Canadian children’s literature. The theme for this year’s kit is The Magic of Books. Senator Tommy Banks, children’s illustrator Kady MacDonald Denton, and writers Laurent Chabin and Katherine Holubitsky were special guests at the event.

Read up On It is an annual bilingual guide to the best in Canadian literature for children and young adults and is based on the National Library of Canada’s Canadian children’s literature collection. Included in the kit is a selection of books in alternate formats such as audio books, Braille and large print. The Web version also includes Canadian award-winning books for young people. The aim of Read Up On It is to increase literacy among young people and encourage them to appreciate Canadian authors, illustrators and their works.

"I wish to express my deep appreciation to the National Literacy Secretariat, CLA (Canadian Library Association), ASTED (Association pour l’avancement des sciences et des techniques de la documentation) and all other organizations dedicated to encouraging reading among our youth," said
Dr. Carrier. "Thanks to their participation, this program has proven to be a success in our schools and libraries throughout the country."

Read Up On It  -  The Magic of Books contains reading lists with brief descriptions of each title, suggested activities, a poster and bookmarks, all related to the theme of magic. The kits will be distributed to over 30 000 groups and individuals across Canada.

Read Up On It kits are available free of charge on the National Library of Canada’s Web site at www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/read-up-on-it/ or by contacting the Library at:
