Women Artists Celebrated on National Library of Canada Web site

Ottawa, October 16, 2002  -  October is Women’s History Month and every year the National Library of Canada honours a selection of women who, through their accomplishments, have made a significant contribution to Canadian society. This year, the National Library celebrates Women Artists in Canada with the addition of 24 new biographies to its Web site Celebrating Women’s Achievements (www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/women/).

Discover women such as Marcelle Ferron, the first woman painter to receive the prestigious Prix Paul-Émile Borduas; Kenojuak Ashevak, the famous Inuit sculptor who was recently inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame; and experimental filmmaker and artist Joyce Wieland, who produced a film inspired by one of Pierre Elliott Trudeau’s most famous speeches.

Other featured artists are Raymonde April, Micheline Beauchemin, Geneviève Cadieux, Janet Cardiff, Emily Carr, Lynne Cohen, Paraskeva Clark, Gathie Falk, Betty Goodwin, Prudence Heward, Rita Letendre, Frances Loring, Liz Magor, Helen McNicoll, Lilias Torrance Newton, Daphne Odjig, Mary Pratt, Charlotte Schreiber, Françoise Sullivan, Anna Weber and Florence Wyle.

Some of these women are well known, while others worked throughout their careers in relative obscurity, finding it difficult to gain recognition in their field as women artists. Each one has made a difference and has inspired others by her dedication and perseverance.

The National Library of Canada has compiled comprehensive biographies of these women as well as reproductions of their work and lists of suggested readings. This year’s achievers join accomplished Canadian women in other fields of endeavour, including literature, sports, music, politics and social activism.
