Nicole Brossard Fonds Now Available at the Library and Archives of Canada

Ottawa, October 21, 2002  - National Librarian Roch Carrier is pleased to announce the acquisition of the Nicole Brossard fonds. Born in Montreal in 1943, the international renowned poet, novelist and essayist has published more than 40 works. Her writing style has influenced many writers: men and women, francophone and anglophone, from Quebec, other parts of Canada and abroad. Nicole Brossard has received multiple awards, including two Governor General’s Literary Awards for poetry and the Prix Athanase-David, awarded in 1991.

The Nicole-Brossard fonds comprises more than nine meters of textual documents, several audio tapes and iconographic documents from 1965 to 2001. The collection includes the manuscripts of five novels: Un livre, Picture Theory, Le Désert mauve, Baroque d’aube and Hier; a dozen post-1970s poetry collections at various stages of development; unpublished poems and intimate diaries testifying to the genesis of Brossard’s works and her relationship with writing. Several archival documents allow us to trace the history of the last 30 years of the feminist movement, revealing her involvement in the emergence of lesbian culture and showing the scope of her influence on the development of feminist writing.

The research potential of the Nicole Brossard fonds will no doubt capture the interest of literary experts as well as women’s studies scholars in Canada and abroad.

The new Library and Archives of Canada acquires, protects and promotes, today and in the years to come, Canada’s heritage for all Canadians. Fonds of Réjean Ducharme, Michel Tremblay, Carol Shields and many other Canadian writers are already part of the literary manuscript collection.
