Book Printed Circa 1475 Part of New Exhibit at the Library and Archives of Canada

Ottawa, November 7, 2002  -  Some of the world’s most beautiful manuscripts, an 18th-century copperplate map of the Holy Land and a Bible commentary printed in Italy circa 1475 are all part of a fascinating new exhibit entitled In Good Company: A Celebration of the Jacob M. Lowy Collection in Its 25th Year, which officially opened today at the Library and Archives of Canada.

The exhibit brings together some of the most intriguing and beloved books of the 4 000 volume Lowy Collection of old and rare Hebraica and Judaica, dating from the 15th to the 20th century.

Over the course of 50 years, Jacob M. Lowy, philanthropist and scholar, transformed his great passion for Judaism and Jewish learning into a richly textured private library of over 2 500 books. In 1977, he donated his collection to the National Library of Canada and to the people of Canada. In the last 25 years, others were inspired by Lowy and donated generously to the Collection.

Presently in the Collection, there are 34 Hebrew and Latin printed texts from the 15th century, over 120 editions of Bibles in many languages and numerous editions of the works of the first century historian Flavius Josephus. The Collection includes books printed over five centuries that encompass religious, scientific, historical and philosophical thought spanning a millennium.

The exhibition In Good Company: A Celebration of the Jacob M. Lowy Collection in Its 25th Year will run at the Library and Archives of Canada, 395 Wellington Street in Ottawa, from November 7, 2002 until January 5, 2003. Admission is free.
