Oscar Peterson Travelling Exhibition Opens at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Ottawa, November 8, 2002  -  Internationally acclaimed jazz pianist, and one of Canada’s most prolific musicians, Oscar Peterson will be the star attraction at the official opening ceremony of the Library and Archives of Canada’s travelling exhibit Oscar Peterson: A Jazz Sensation at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, November 12, 2002.

Oscar Peterson has been depositing his archives with the National Library of Canada since 1991. Through the use of music, films, photos, correspondence and more, the exhibition portrays a career that has spanned more than half a century, from its roots in Montreal’s black district to the world’s most prominent stages.

Oscar Peterson: A Jazz Sensation is a follow-up to the major exhibition held at the National Library of Canada from July 2000 to February 2001 that showcased the jazz great. In addition to the reproductions of the archival material, the exhibition also features the ingenious Yamaha Diskclavier which plays a selection of Oscar Peterson’s audio tracks automatically when a visitor enters the exhibit area.

Oscar Peterson, who received honorary doctorates from seven universities and prestigious awards from organizations around the world, has collaborated throughout his career with fellow jazz legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Stan Getz. He continues to perform today and is very active in educating a new generation in music appreciation.

The exhibition will be on display at the Canadian Embassy Art Gallery until March 2003. It will also be shown at several other international venues over the next few years before returning to Canada. Admission is free.
