Home /Claimsmap /Saskatchewan /Inquiries /Completed Inquiries – Reports Released Completed Inquiries – Reports Released01/03/1999 Nekaneet First Nation [Entitlement to Treaty Benefits] - March 1999March 1999 In February 1987, the Nekaneet First Nation submitted a specific claim to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development seeking compensation under Treaty 4 for items promised but never provided, including agricultural benefits, programs and services, and annual payments to band members. The First Nation also sought damages for failure to provide a reserve at the time the treaty was signed in 1874. In July 2002, the Commission’s mediation unit was asked to participate at the negotiation table as mediator/facilitator. Before negotiations could get underway, however, Canada asked for time to review the policy regarding modern implementation of treaty benefits relating to the provision of agricultural implements.
