Commissioners Appointed to Indian Claims Commission

Ottawa (July 31, 1992) - Chief Commissioner Harry LaForme confirmed today the appointments of six additional Commissioners to the Indian Claims Commission. Commissioners appointed by Privy Council are:

• Roger Augustine of Newcastle, New Brunswick

• Dan Bellegarde of Goodeve, Saskatchewan

• Carole Corcoran of Prince George, British Columbia

• Carol A. Dutcheshen of Winnipeg, Manitoba

• Charles Hamelin of Baie-Saint-Paul, Quebec

• James E. Prentice of Calgary, Alberta

The Indian Claims Commission is a Royal Commission established by the Government of Canada as an independent body to assist parties involved in specific claims negotiations. The Commission will conduct inquiries into the validity of claims and the compensation criteria being applied by the government to settle validated claims. As well, the Commission will provide mediation services at the request of the parties to a claim. Reports of its findings and recommendations will be issued.

"I look forward to working with my new colleagues and bringing a fresh, independent perspective to the long and difficult process of claims negotiation," said Mr. LaForme, who is a lawyer from the Mississaugas of New Credit First Nation.
