Welcome to the Internet website of the
Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation, the "Riding Mountain Band". |
Welcome to the website of the history of our First Nation.
The Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation has been known by many names
in the past. At the time before our people entered in Treaty 2 with the
British Imperial Crown in 1871, our people were called the Riding Mountain
Band, because our people lived in the Riding Mountains. We've also been
called the 'Okanase band', named after Michel Cardinal, who was called
Okanase or "Oukannaysic" or "Little Bones". Note: Not to be confused with
the Okanese Band in Saskatchewan.
When Okanase died, about 1870, his son Mekis "The Eagle" became
chief, and our band was referred to as Mekis' band at the time of Treaty.
Upon Mekis' death, during the winter of 1874-75, his half-brother Keeseekoowenin
became chief, and our First Nation became known as Keeseekoowenin's band.
Today, the Keeseekoowenin Ojibway First Nation has three reserves: the
main reserve is Keeseekoowenin Indian Reserve 61 which is located adjacent
to the village of Elphinstone, Manitoba; the second reserve is the Clear
Lake Indian Reserve 61A, on the shores of Clear Lake, in Riding Mountain
National Park; and a third reserve called the Bottle Lake Indian Reserve
61B next to Bottle Lake or "Battle Lake", as it was originally
known.
