La Vérendrye did most of his exploration by canoe and on horseback. The canoe of the time was made with a wooden frame and covered with the bark from a birch tree. It was very light and could be carried easily.

Interesting Fact
Graphical element: spacer While horses had reached southern Alberta by the early 1700s, south-eastern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba wouldn't have them for another 50 years or so.
