BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: He moved with his family to Walkerton, Ontario, in 1894 and learned photography there from a Mr. Rawe about 1894. He then came to the West Coast and was employed as a picture framer by S.J. Thompson. The List of Voters shows him as photographer. He later ran his own studio, the King Photo Studio, until 1905, then worked in New Westminster and Nanaimo as a photographer. His sister reported that "His first interest was in photography, and he took many portraits and studies of Indians in all parts of Canada."

NAME: Klotz, Otto Julius.

BIOGRAPHICAL SUMMARY: After studying medicine and engineering at Toronto University, Klotz joined the Topographical Surveys Branch, Dominion Dept. of the Interior (1879-1908). He surveyed along the Canadian Pacific Railway line through the mountains to delimit the 10-mile wide Railway Belt land grant. He was the first to determine the heights of principal mountain peaks along the railway and named many of them. Klotz also worked on the Alaska boundary survey in 1893-1894. While in London, England, in 1898 he discovered an important cache of Foreign Office correspondence, much of which pertained to the North American Boundary Commission, some of whose Royal Engineer members were photographers. Klotz was later director of the Dominion Observatory, Ottawa (1917-). A photograph of the Glacier House under construction in 1886 was published in Hart (1983).

Two photographs credited to Kreling were published in the San Francisco The Examiner on January 23, 1898 (p. 17 and 18).
