Representational oil painter Sanford Fisher was educated at the Anglican boarding school on his home reserve. His portraits and scenes are marked by a distinctive use of colour and a sureness of technique which placed him among the most distinguished Cree painters of his generation. This achievement is all the more remarkable considering that a train accident in 1972 forced the amputation of Fisher's left painting hand, burdening the artist with the arduous challenge of relearning his famed technique with his right hand.
