Katsi'tsakwas Ellen Gabriel

b. Kanehsatà:ke, Québec
First Nations Affiliation: Mohawk

Primarily an illustrator, Katsi'tsakwas Ellen Gabriel is a graduate of Concordia University's B.F.A. programme (1990). She first came to national attention as spokesperson for the People of the Longhouse of Kanehsatà:ke during the Crisis of 1990 (Oka) and has continued in this role at speaking engagements across Canada, in Europe, and in Japan. To this end also, she sees her art as combatting the stereotypes and misconceptions held by non-Natives. Gabriel was the recipient of a Canadian Native Arts Foundation Grant (1989-90) and a Seagram's Foundation - Concordia University Video production grant (1992-97).
