First Nations Affiliation: Seneca, Tuscarora

George Longfish studied painting, sculpture, printmaking, and film at the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating with an M.F.A. in 1972. His practice was exclusively concerned with formal questions until he directed projects for the Graduate Programme in American Indian Art in Montana. As a professor of historical and contemporary Native arts at the University of California at Davis, and director of its C.N. Gorman Museum from 1974-96, Longfish has also been influential as an educator, curator, and writer. Although known for his often- large, vivid paintings (some incorporating stenciled text) he has won several awards for sculpture.
