The Canadian Ninety-Nines are women pilots who took up flying for the joy and the challenge, and in doing so, have made significant progress in a male-dominated field. Often, 99s are asked how they got their name. In 1929, all 117 licensed American women pilots were invited to assemble for mutual support and the advancement of aviation; 99 women responded, and Amelia Earhart was elected first president. The 99s organize air safety seminars and courses, they are active in civilian air search and rescue training, winter survival training and sponsoring Transport Canada enrichment courses. They also participate in many aviation events and the World Precision-Flying Competition and have granted numerous awards to educational organizations, charitable institutions or private individuals whose activities improve aviation and aeronautics in Canada. Canadian 99s have been or are owners and operators of airlines or airports, chief flying instructors, test pilots, civil aviation inspectors, flying doctors, air race participants and war-time Air Transport Auxiliary pilots.
