THE SPECIAL SERVICE MEDAL

THE SPECIAL SERVICE MEDAL

The Special Service Medal, created on June 11, 1984, is awarded to members of the Canadian Forces who have performed special service under exceptional circumstances or conditions as determined by the Governor in Council. The Medal may be awarded posthumously.

The Special Service Medal consists of a circular medal of copper and zinc alloy, bearing on the obverse a maple leaf surrounded by a laurel wreath. On the reverse appears the inscription SPECIAL SERVICE SPÉCIAL ensigned with the Royal Crown and Cipher. The ribbon from which the Medal is suspended is dark green in colour, flanked with white and edged with red. It is awarded with a bar representing a particular special service. Bars have been approved for PAKISTAN 89-90, NATO, ALERT, Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Service.

A small silver, gold or red maple leaf shall be worn on the undress ribbon to indicate a second, third or fourth award, respectively.

The Chief of the Defence Staff recommends to the Governor General those persons who are eligible for the award of the Medal. The Medal is awarded on behalf of Her Majesty by Instrument signed by the Governor General. The Medal is presented by arrangement with the Chief of the Defence Staff unless directed otherwise by the Governor General.

The Special Service Medal is part of the Canadian Honours System, established in 1967.
