The Canadian Coast Guard Exemplary Service Medal was created on March 14, 1991, to recognize employees who have completed twenty years of service with the Department of Transport, ten of which have been served with the Canadian Coast Guard in the performance of duties involving potential risk. Exemplary Service is characterized by good conduct, industry and efficiency.
Eligible employees must have worked for the Department of Transport on or after the date of creation of the Medal. Consideration is only given to periods of service for which no other long service, good conduct or efficiency decoration or medal has been awarded by the Crown.
An Advisory Committee consists of the Assistant Deputy Minister, Marine; the Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard (Chairperson); the Deputy Commissioner, Canadian Coast Guard; the Director General, Fleet Systems, Canadian Coast Guard; and two other senior members of the Canadian Coast Guard who are appointed by the Commissioner. The Chairperson of the Advisory Committee submits nominations to the Chancellery, the branch of the Office of the Governor General responsible for the administration of honours. The Advisory Committee examines nominations and recommends the deserving nominees to the Governor General for approval. The Medal or a bar is then sent to the Chairperson of the Advisory Committee for formal presentation to the recipient.
The Coast Guard Exemplary Service Medal consists of a circular medal with the crest of the Canadian Coast Guard circumscribed with the words "Exemplary Service - Services distingu‰s" on the obverse, and Her Majesty's Cipher on the reverse. The Medal is suspended from a blue ribbon that has a narrow white stripe in the centre and a broader gold stripe near each edge.
A bar, bearing a stylized maple leaf centred upon it, may be awarded to a recipient of the Medal in respect of each additional ten-year period of service with the Department of Transport, following the twenty-year period in respect of which the person was awarded the Medal. Five of the ten years must have been served with the Canadian Coast Guard in the performance of duties involving potential risk.
The Canadian Coast Guard Exemplary Service Medal is part of the Canadian Honours System established in 1967.
