A variety of personal superstitions also exist to predict the future, or gain knowledge of what one does not already know.

A happiness plant grows best in a happy house. The happiness plant, a starlike house plant is supposed to reflect the atmosphere of a household. A happy household should show a thriving plant, whereas an unhappy household shows an unhealthy one.

A stranger is coming if you drop a dishtowel.

A baby is coming if you drop a spoon.

If you drop a fork on the floor, a woman will visit you.

If you drop a knife on the floor, a man will visit you.

If you drop a spoon on the floor, children will visit you.

If a roooster crows outside the door, company is coming.

Two forks set at one place setting means a wedding is to come.

If you drop a potato, you will have special company.

If you have a visitor on Monday you will have one every day of the week.

When you cut your birthday cake, icing on the knife shows that the birthday person has a girlfriend/boyfriend.

When you buy someone a wallet put a penny in it or that person will never have money.

Buying knives as a gift represents a cut friendship.

An itchy nose means that one is in a fighting mood, or that you may win money.

If you throw away half of an egg shell the fairies will find it and use it to sail across the sea to Ireland.

If you throw dishwater out of the door after dark, you will get a sore leg.

If you take seconds while you still have food on your plate, you will have company that's hungry.

Don't step on the cracks or you'll break your mother's back.

If you get wet spots on your shirt after washing the dishes you will marry a drunk.
