Wawanesa: A Prairie Heritage

Methven was an elevator site that developed into a small town. A store, a hotel, and a small school house quickly developed to serve the needs of the growing community. The Methven church was originally part of the Milford circuit, but later became the head church of the Methven circuit that included the Wawanesa and Chesley districts.
Methven was situated where the Northern Pacific Railroad (the future C.N.R.) and the C.P.R. lines crossed. A tower was built to monitor the crossing and house the many controls that were necessary to ensure that it was a safe train crossing.

About a decade into the twentieth century, Methven’s businesses began to close. The post office survived for many years through the efforts of various local people but it eventually closed in 1964 and the last building in Methven was dismantled and removed.
