Wawanesa: Neighbouring Communities
Picture Gallery
Before the turn of the century, Wawanesa was surrounded by other small towns, each with similar early histories. Several, such as Milford or Methven, do not exist today. Others, such as Nesbitt and Treesbank are still home to a handful of buildings and people. The story of these towns is typical of towns all across the Prairies. Small towns were started before the turn of the century and, for one reason or another, failed to survive. In the case of Milford, the town was started in the hopes of becoming a stop on the new railroad, only to be passed by and subsequently abandoned. Others, such as Methven or Nesbitt have seen their populations dwindle as their citizens moved to larger towns such as Wawanesa or the nearby city of Brandon. Nonetheless, the story of each Prairie village is worth telling. A century ago, the Prairies were dotted with many small settlements and each was crucial to the lives of the inhabitants and nearby farmers.
