Although this talented illustrator and author of children's books has no formal training in illustration or art, his interest in drawing was encouraged in high school. His teachers' support led him to seek work with Radio Canada where he worked for 25 years as a graphic artist for children's television. His first children's books were published to acclaim in 1979 and, since the early 1980s, he has worked full-time in children's literature, primarily illustrating and writing children's books. While his stories are full of wit and humour, Paré's approach to illustration is serious. He wants his pictures to have the quality of a painting and creates his story around them -- the images dictate the text and set the tone and atmosphere for the entire story. Paré's whimsical and vibrant pictures, often depicting animals, appeal to a widespread audience and surpass the boundaries of language. Popular throughout Canada, his books have also enjoyed international acclaim and have been translated into many languages. In addition to his work as an illustrator and author, he has been a juror for the Governor General's Literary Awards, been a member of the Communication-Jeunesse selection committee, and has also designed stamps and greeting cards. The National Library's holdings consist of 24 original illustrations used in the book, L'Alphabet, and a group of original illustrations used for the game which was issued with the book by Éditions la courte échelle in 1985.
