Michèle Lemieux, 1955-

Place of birth: Quebec City, Quebec
Place of residence: Montreal, Quebec

Bibliography

After many years abroad, Michèle Lemieux now lives and paints in Montreal. She has established an international reputation and her paintings have been exhibited in New York, Tokyo, Czechoslovakia, Germany, France, Italy and Canada. Her books have been published in English, French, German, and several other languages. Lemieux's paintings are soft and luminescent. They have a timeless, almost mystical, quality which seems to invite the reader or viewer to enter the picture and become a part of the story. She enjoys experimenting with different media and has used watercolour, gouache, acrylics, oils, and collage. Included in the National Library exhibition, "The Art of Illustration", are original watercolour illustrations created for Amahl and the Night Visitors. Lemieux thoroughly researches all aspects of her stories and does many small drawings before working on her rough sketches. For Amahl and the Night Visitors, with reference books to guide her, she drew as many camels in as many positions as she could think of, so that she would know exactly how each camel would fit into both her rough sketches and final paintings before she began to work on them. Along with her work as an illustrator, Michèle Lemieux currently teaches drawing and illustration at the department of design of the Université du Québec à Montréal since 1982.
