Gilles Tibo was at the forefront of a surge in picture-book art in Quebec when he embarked on his career as a children's book illustrator in the mid 1970s. This self-taught artist knew that he wanted to be an illustrator from an early age and spent many hours drawing and painting. He began his career by creating comic strips, and in 1975 illustrated his first children's book. It was not until he published the picture-book edition of Edgar Allen Poe's poem, Annabel Lee (1987), that his paintings rewarded him with international prais. The exquisite illustrations, which are highly evocative in mood and atmosphere, reveal the universality of Poe's thoughts by transporting them to the picturesque setting of Quebec's Gaspé region. They are a wonderful complement to Poe's hauntingly melodic poetry. The magical world created in Annabel Lee, and in the award-winning Simon series, is brought to life with a technique called airbrush painting. It is the perfect medium to express the soft, dream-like tones of Tibo's pictures and stories because it produces subtle ranges of intensity and depth. The technique requires much dexterity and patience -- the pistol-like brush shoots ink out of a tiny hole, and any revisions to a painting require starting over. Details added later with coloured pencil enhance the polished look of the illustrations. The National Library holds the original paintings for the first book in the Simon series, Simon and the Snowflakes, a delightful counting book that finds young Simon counting the snowflakes in a snowstorm, the stars in the sky, and the lights in a city.
