"I believe an illustrator has to be a costume designer, set designer and an actor all in one, for he or she must put characters in a setting that not only tells a story but is also filled with emotions and feelings."
(Laszlo Gal quoted in Booth, David. "Laszlo Gal: Illustrating the Text". Writers on Writing. Markham, Ont.: Overlea House, 1989. P. 15.)
After emigrating to Canada from Budapest in 1956, Laszlo Gal worked for T. Eaton, the Globe & Mail, and the CBC graphic arts department. An offer from the Italian firm, Mondadori Editori, led to a picture-book contract and a four-year stay in Italy. His work in Italy provided him with an opportunity to experiment with colour and technique and to immerse himself in Italian art and architecture. Upon his return to Canada, the rich and decorative style of his paintings, which had always been influenced by his east European heritage, began to show evidence of his new interest in Italian art. With each of his books, Gal strives to develop a distinctive ambience which will reflect the setting and period of the story. He spends a great deal of time on research and preliminary sketches. For The Twelve Dancing Princesses (1979), Renaissance-style architecture and costuming evoke the period of the tale, while the rich browns of Chinese silk paintings give his illustrations for The Enchanted Tapestry (1987) the appearance of ornate tapestries. Many of Laszlo Gal's illustrations are framed with intricately styled borders. The black and white borders of his favourite book, Canadian Fairy Tales (1984), give his paintings a rich and detailed appearance. The National Library's holdings include illustrations, sketches and tracings for The Twelve Dancing Princesses (1979), The Little Mermaid (1983) and Canadian Fairy Tales (1984).
