Impressions: 250 Years of Printing in the Lives of Canadians

Agriculture and Trades

It is nearly certain that this customs document was printed in Halifax by John Bushell (died 1761) between 1752 and 1757. It would make it the earliest example of Canadian printing in the National Library of Canada. Unfortunately, few of these early examples of job printing have survived.

Prices current were some of the first imprints in Canada. This particular example is sent with a letter written by Mather Byles Almon to merchants in Madeira. It travelled by the chartered schooner The Sophia (named after Almon's wife). Merchants such as Almon and others in Eastern Canada used the printing press for advertisements and blanks, and for personal messages such as invitations and other forms of job printing. Almon later became one of the directors of the Bank of Nova Scotia.
