 Roy's work was published in English and translated into French the same year. One can see from these examples that the readers could use editions published in their second language. In 1857, O. Durocher of Longueuil used this book to learn English by writing in certain difficult words in French. The French language edition was owned by Dudley Baxter. Oblate Father Le Jeune was the editor of the Kamloops Wawa in which he printed Chinook jargon in Roman orthography and in an adaptation of the Duployé shorthand. Chinook jargon was used extensively in contacts between the Natives and the settlers of British Columbia.
Certain manuals, inspired by European works, were designed to supply model letters for all occasions, even that of love.
