I’m a “whoosher”. I write in a big “whoosh” until I have finished a piece. Most ideas pop into my mind when I can’t write them down: in the shower, while I’m driving, when I’m swimming. I think this is because they can escape “Ed,” the editor, who lives in my mind. The moment I start clicking away on my computer Ed yells things like: “That won’t work!” or “What a stupid sentence!”
I often finish in the wee hours of the morning when Ed is exhausted and has gone to bed. Then “Crea,” my creator, thinks my writing is brilliant. The next day Ed shakes his head, shifts into high gear and starts fine-tuning. He deletes contrived “darlings,” adds new images, and changes sentence structure until he feels everything is humming along. Then he hangs up his tool belt and waits for Crea to rev her engines and create something new. It’s a good partnership – but definitely volatile!

I live in the country in Cedar (the southern part of Nanaimo) about twenty minutes
from the city centre. On my short, dead-end road, all my neighbours have large lots of an acre
(4000 square metres) or more, and most have ocean views. I can watch sailboats glide by, eagles
land in our arbutus trees, rabbits hop across our yard, and deer nibble flowers we thought were deer-proof.
One day I saw an otter rolling around on our welcome mat! I love driving home along the winding roads and
often stop to buy fresh eggs and fruit. Cedar is noted for its down-to-earth people who often congregate
at The Crow and Gate, an old English pub. I'm one of the most consistent congregators.

WRITING EXCERPTS FROM ONE SWEET RIDE
I didn’t go to my 20th High School Reunion. So I didn’t get to see Katherine McCullough wear her pin. That evening I was sitting in a crowded outdoor café in Switzerland, drinking wine with my sister. With each glass we were becoming more clever, more philosophical, more witty, absolutely BRILLIANT, when I noticed the Swissair pilot sitting across from me. - From: “The Perfect Reunion”
